Earlier this month Jenny Fisher, coach for our U12 team's and Hampshire 2 player completed the NEW YORK MARATHON! What an achievement Jenny - you are truly a superstar! A massive congratulations from everyone here at Swan Netball Club. After returning home Jenny told us how her New York Marathon experience went...
I started running (or plodding) 7 years ago, mostly because it got me out of the house for an hour of peace and quiet and me time. It also helped my fitness levels for my first and greatest passion of playing netball. When a friend challenged me 6 months ago to run the New York Marathon after a bit of persuasion I reluctantly said yes. I had never run further than 9 miles so I felt I had a mountain to climb. I won’t lie the hours of training, running in the wind and rain, at times for hours, became fairly relentless but after pounding the 26.2 miles round the streets of New York the effort put in was well worth it. The atmosphere was electric, the crowds were amazing and the sights outstanding. 26.2 miles is a long way but I would highly recommend doing a marathon to anyone. It never fails to surprise me what we can achieve if we put our minds to it. New York’s Marathon is the most attended one in the marathon calendar and I was one of the lucky 53,000 people to be there. I was delighted with my 4 hours and 14 minutes time and coming 1025 out 5000 for my age group but actually the memories I will take from the experience override any time or placing. For now I am hanging up my running shoes, although apparently like childbirth you forget the pain and end up signing up for another, and returning with full force back to the netball courts.
Well done Jenny - we hope your feet are recovering okay!
